Historical Significance

Established by a British agriculturist, Sir William Roberts, the Khanewal farm was initially created for cotton production under the British Cotton Growing Association in 1959. After the Land Reform Act, the area was taken back and handed over to the West Pakistan Agricultural Development Corporation in 1976. Later, it was transferred to the Punjab Seed Corporation for further development and seed production.

Foundation Seed Cell

Punjab Seed Corporation recognizing the importance of variety maintenance established the Foundation Seed Cell at Pirowal for research and development of high productivity seed.
  • Genetically pure seed development – visually highlight with icons for plant growth stages
    To develop genetically pure seed, single plants are sown in equal-length rows and closely monitored for growth, development, and uniformity in characteristics like plant height, leaf color, shape, and yield. Any row containing an off-type plant at any stage is entirely rejected to maintain purity.
  • Progressive plots
    Progressive plots are formed from the plant to row input seed.
  • Breeder Nucleus Stock (BNS)
    BNS (Breeder Nucleus Stock) in this process of seed purification, the progenies of variety showing uniformity are bulked. This bulk is called Breeder Nucleus stock and has 100% purity. The resulting progeny of breeder nucleus seed is the pre basic seed.
  • Pre Basic Seed.
    Pre-basic seed, ensuring genetic purity, is the foundation for producing basic seed. Its quality is verified by the Federal Seed Certification Department and identified by white tags with a violet diagonal line.
  • Basic Seed production.
    Basic seed, produced from pre-basic seed, is used for certified seed production. It is inspected by the Federal Seed Certification Department and identified with white tags.
  • Certified Seed.
    Certified seed, produced by registered growers, is derived from basic seed. Punjab Seed Corporation processes, cleans, and packs it after approval from the Federal Seed Certification Department. Certified seed bags are marked with blue tags.
